Most people celebrate Valentine’s with good food – meat, some vegetables (hopefully), wine, and definitely dessert. And because it’s a special occasion, there is nearly always a tendency to overindulge on the food, the desserts, and the candies. Come next morning and suddenly the idea of food doesn’t seem that appealing anymore, and then there’s this nagging, queasiness in your stomach. This begs the question: So how?
There are many other reasons why over-indulging may make you feel nauseous or uncomfortable. But the answer to the problem is not to not eat at all. And because here at Gourmet Club we’d like to cure all your with other food-related problems (over-indulgence included), here are a few pointers to soothe your bloated stomachs for the rest of your day.
1. Have some dry, preferably tasteless, crackers. Make sure you keep some handy packets with you at all times.
2. Sip (read: small amounts) of cool, but not ice cold, carbonated drinks. Not really the healthiest choice, but unless you have baking soda at hand and can mix it with water to drink it, then the next best choice would be that can of Coke.
3. Or, if you’ve sworn off carbonated drinks, try one of the soothing teas – chamomile, peppermint, ginger. If the idea of ginger tea terrifies you, rest assured that the taste is a lot more mild than consuming ginger itself. But if you really do not like it, try ginger root supplements. Those may be a lot easier to swallow.
4. Avoid hot, spicy, greasy or strong-smelling foods. The overwhelming smell and taste may just trigger another bout of nausea.
5. Avoid hot food in general – have some foods that are at room temperature or cooler, but not cold, like ice cream. Just give the piping hot food in front of you a few minutes to cool down. They won’t be any less tasty and you can be sure to avoid scalding your tongue!
6. Salty foodstuffs are recommended, but make sure that they are not overly salty, and take them in moderation! Pretzels, for example, are a good choice.
7. To counter the stomach acids, try the BRAT diet – Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. If you can’t get applesauce off-hand, just grab an apple. The main point is to consume these foods to allow them to soak up the excess stomach acids.
Lastly, eat well, and we hope that you had a happy Valentine’s!
